NORR and Cion are now “Bronze” Carbon Literate Organizations

Advancing our commitment to reduce corporate carbon emissions and support a net zero carbon future

NORR and Building Sciences sister company Cion have officially been accredited as “Bronze” Carbon Literate Organizations (CLO), recognizing our commitment to reducing corporate carbon emissions and fostering a low-carbon culture across our teams.

A Carbon Literate Organization is accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project as being “culturally Carbon Literate.” This means a significant portion of the workforce is Carbon Literate and the organization demonstrates that literacy through its training, policies, behaviors and operations. The CLO accreditation follows a tiered system—Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum—each reflecting increasing levels of climate action and leadership. The Carbon Literacy Project is a UN-recognized initiative. To date, over 122,000 individuals from more than 8,300 organizations have become Carbon Literate through the program.

NORR and Cion first engaged with Carbon Literacy through Positive Planet, where several team members completed training and became formally accredited. Carbon Literacy is defined as “an awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions on an individual, community and organizational basis.” It is typically achieved through a full day of learning and climate action planning, followed by individual and group-based commitments by trained individuals.

To achieve “Bronze” accreditation, NORR and Cion delivered bespoke Carbon Literacy training to all individuals within the Global Sustainability Group who have pledged the following carbon reducing actions through their work across the industry:

  • Take public transit for business travel;
  • Teach Carbon Literacy internally via quarterly all-staff webinars, as well as externally (higher-ed);
  • Divestment of personal retirement finances from non-echoically aligned entities; and
  • Q4 Carbon Literacy training to increase our number of “literate” staff annually.

Blake Jackson, Director of Sustainability at NORR, commented: “Carbon Literacy training offers learning that can help anyone, at any level within an organization, make tangible connections between their personal, and work, behaviors and their measurable environmental impacts. By bringing this heightened carbon awareness to our staff, we hope to inspire and empower them to make positive choices and impacts, both through their work at NORR, Cion, and beyond.”

Dave Coleman, Co-Founder and Managing Director of The Carbon Literacy Project, stated: “Carbon Literacy is an essential skill vital to every workplace, community and place of study. It is the foundational knowledge and a catalyst to empowering people to act on climate. By becoming a “Bronze” accredited Carbon Literate Organization, NORR and Cion have demonstrated their commitment to genuine low-carbon action, environmental and economic impact and the building of a low-carbon future for us all.”
